Ranked No. 2 in Orange County, The Lions clinched their first-ever Trinity League baseball title last week. And four seniors have earned college baseball scholarships. They are: Joe Kurrasch, University of California, Berkeley; Matt Paradise, Santa Clara University; Todd del Toro, Air Force Academy and Grahamm Wiest, Cal State Fullerton.

JSerra Blog asked Coach Brett Kay a few questions about the team’s prospects for the playoffs.

JSerra Blog: What are you doing to prepare for the playoffs?
Coach Kay: We won’t prepare any differently than what we have done for the last three months.  Of course, we will scout the teams we will play and try to find team tendencies. But we have to continue to stay in our routine and clean up some stuff defensively and offensively.

JSerra Blog: What did you set out to accomplish at the beginning of the year, and what’s your assessment of how the team has done so far?
Coach Kay: We always set goals from a team standpoint, and the first one was to get better everyday. I think this team has done that.  Winning league was a huge goal that was in front of us at the beginning of the year, and the boys reached that goal by working hard towards it each and everyday.  CIF championship is the next goal, and this team has the ability to reach that goal.

JSerra Blog: What do you attribute to the team’s success?

Coach Kay: The team chemistry has been magnificent this year.

JSerra Blog: How does this team compare with teams you played on at Mater Dei, Cal State Fullerton and in the New York Mets organization?
Coach Kay: This generation of player is so different than when I played. The kids are different and I think we have to adjust at times how we coach them. I would say each team I played on is very comparable to this specific team. We always had good chemistry for the most part and we enjoyed the game each and every day.

JSerra Blog: What do enjoy most about coaching at JSerra?

Coach Kay: The boys. Each and every day is a challenge to try to better these student-athletes.  I enjoy watching them learn and develop.

JSerra Blog: How do you calm players’ nerves before a big game?
Coach Kay:  I think it is important for the coaches to show that this is just another game, and to understand that you are a model in regards to how a player looks at you.  If you are tense and nervous and show it, your players are going to do the same.  We try to keep it upbeat. We are relaxed and realize this is just another game and encourage the boys to let their God-given talent take over. No team is more prepared than this team.

JSerra Blog: Any predictions for how far you’ll go in the playoffs?
Coach Kay: Division 1 is such a dominant conference and any team can win.  It all depends on the bounces and what you can overcome.  It is going to be very exciting to go out and show everyone out there what we can do.
