JSERRA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL HIRES TWO-SPORT OLYMPIAN TO RUN AQUATICS PROGRAM
(San Juan Capistrano, CA) JSerra Catholic High School has hired a decorated two-sport Olympian to direct its aquatics program, school officials announced today.
Julie Swail-Ertel, of Irvine, was captain of the 2000 silver-medalist women’s water polo team in Sydney, Australia. Eight years later, at 35, she competed on the U.S. triathlon squad in Beijing, China, finishing 19th.
“It’s amazing what your body can do when your mind believes,” said Swail-Ertel. “I look forward to sharing my knowledge with the outstanding scholar-athletes at JSerra – and preparing as many as possible for collegiate careers.”
JSerra CEO Frank Talarico described hiring Swail-Ertel as “an incredible coup.”
“How many high school coaches/aquatics instructors have competed in the Olympics in a single sport, much less two?” Talarico asked. “She was captain of the silver-medal water polo team – and later became a world-class triathlete. She presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn and work with one of America’s truly elite athletes.”
Swail-Ertel’s hiring is the latest chapter in JSerra Catholic High School’s emergence as an athletic powerhouse. The six-year-old school won its first Trinity League championships last school year in boys’ soccer, baseball and boys’ lacrosse.
“I predict we’ll soon be adding water polo and swimming to the list,” said Swail-Ertel.
She said part of JSerra’s allure is its state-of-the art facilities.
Its $110-million campus has been compared to an Ivy League university. And its athletics complex is the envy of sports programs everywhere.
