JSerra Catholic High School Fields ‘Most Competitive’ Football Team Yet

The Capistrano Dispatch published the following preview of JSerra CHS’ football team in its current edition:

Life in the Trinity League hasn’t been all that much fun for the Lions since joining several years ago. Facing powerhouses such as Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran and Servite year after year will test your program, but coach Jim Hartigan keeps on building.

This year, with his most experienced group of players ever (10 starters on offense, 8 on defense), Hartigan is hoping his Lions can knock off a league foe, and with three key homes games (played at Saddleback College)—Santa Margarita (Oct. 16), Mater Dei (Oct. 30) and St. John Bosco (Nov. 6), this year could be the one.

“We feel like we’ll be the most competitive we’ve ever been since the school opened,” said Hartigan, whose team narrowly lost to Santa Margarita last year by 8 points. “Our goal is to get at least one league win, and build from there. I like the way the stars are lining up.”

Top returners for JSerra include three all-Trinity League performers: On offense, elusive running back Joey Kimpler (5-11, 180, Jr.), quarterback/wideout Bobby Brown (5-11, 160, Sr.) and wideout Otto Behrle (6-1, 160, Sr.) provide experience and firepower. Brown—a terrific athlete—is likely to start at QB backed up by Orange Lutheran transfer Clark Livingston and Jake Hall, both sophomores.

On defense, Hartigan feels his strength is on the defensive front and secondary, but is excited about the linebacker play of senior Samir Hannah, senior Kyle Sonksen and junior Carter Browning.
