In recognition of their prestige as the highest honors bestowed upon a graduating senior, the JSerra Award and the Valedictorian Award are presented at commencement exercises. These awards personify the goals and values embodied in the school’s mission statement.
The JSerra Award is JSerra’s highest honor. It is conferred upon a graduating senior who in addition to general excellence, most nearly embodies the Christian ideals enumerated in JSerra’s mission and philosophy.
This year’s recipient of the JSerra award is Trevor Alexander Cutler. He was chosen by JSerra’s faculty and administration as an outstanding example of the JSerra graduate.
While presenting the JSerra award to Cutler at Saturday’s commencement exercises, Principal Tom Waszak had this to say, “For each of the past four years, you have steadily and consistently worked to be the best version of yourself and in so doing you have brought honor and distinction to yourself, your family, and to JSerra. Whether it’s in the classroom, the ASB office, on the field, or in the courtyard you have conducted yourself in a manner that corresponds with the ideals upon which JSerra was founded and the goals we strive to achieve.”
As a scholar, Trevor demonstrates the values of hard work and determination by earning a 4.5 academic GPA while challenging himself with a rigorous schedule that included 14 honors and AP classes. His exceptional grades have earned him membership in the National Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation; recognition as a National Merit Commended Scholar, an AP Scholar, a scholar athlete, and placement on the Principal’s Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters.
Trevor also stretched his boundaries in sports. Prior to high school he had no experience playing football, volleyball, or running cross country and track, and yet he played at least one sport every year.
His leadership was apparent – though he was not a star athlete, he was selected as team captain for two seasons. In addition, he was elected to serve in leadership roles in ASB, Caritas Christi, National Honor Society, and Junior Classical League. He also achieved the rank of “Eagle Scout” while at JSerra. No matter the role, sport, or activity, he has never backed away from a leadership position.
Trevor will continue his education at the United States Air Force Academy. It came as no surprise that he chose to dedicate his life to the selfless service of our country. Waszak also said of Cutler, “Trevor, it is clearly evident that you are a rare young man truly deserving of this award. While your achievements and contributions are notable, your most impressive quality, the one that makes you the embodiment of this award, is your selfless desire to make a difference in your community and your country.”
Trevor’s commitment to excellence and the respect he shows others is a strong message to all of our students that young people who possess a strong sense of self based on Gospel values can make a difference in this world. Waszak continued “You have accepted the responsibility for your personal growth and you have demonstrated a sincere and humble appreciation for the opportunities that you have been blessed to experience. You have displayed these personal traits and characteristics each and every day for the past four years, and that is why you stand before us today as the recipient of one of the most significant honors to be conferred upon a graduating senior from JSerra Catholic High School.”
Trevor Cutler has been an exemplary student and individual throughout his four years at JSerra. We are confident that he will continue to make a great difference in the world and enthusiastically await the opportunity to share with our community news of his achievements to come.
It is for these reasons that Trevor Alexander Cutler was chosen as JSerra’s seventh JSerra Award recipient. Congratulations, Trevor!
