The brand new JSerra Habitat for Humanity Club came into existence with an amazing count of 62 members at its first meeting Sept. 15! The club was conceptualized by President, Max Champion, who wrote the Club Charter and Constitution last winter. Treasurer, Shea O’Reilly, assisted in the lengthy six month start up process which involved an application to Habitat Int’l. Several activities took place this summer. Eager board members V. P. Chase Coyle; Secretary, Hailey Chisholm; and P.R. rep. Lizzie Evers joined the team. The board held recruitment bonfires; Club Advisor Fr. Damien was available whenever needed for guidance; and the paperwork and interviews with local and Int’l. Habitat offices were finalized in August.
The timing for the Habitat Club’s first meeting was perfect as JSerra volunteers were needed to assist with the dedication of 19 new homes in San Juan Capistrano just ten days later. The new club members met for photos with yearbook moderator, Jeff Kahl, as well as a reporter covering the new Habitat Chapter’s story from the Capistrano Dispatch. Their second meeting is Wed. Oct. 6th at 3:00 in Fr. Damien’s classroom, where all are invited to come volunteer, organize and prepare for their first fundraiser, JSerra Jeans Day to be held on Fri. Oct. 15th. The club promises its members will have a great year as they easily achieve the school’s 20 required hours of Christian Service while working for a fabulous cause.
