Now that JSerra boys soccer has proven itself as a force to be reckoned with in Orange County, the team is looking to make a statement nationally.
The three-time Trinity League champs enter the 2010-2011 season ESPN‘s #1 ranked team in the country.
And senior forward Juan Gutierrez, who has committed play at UC Irvine next year, was heralded by the sports network as the nation’s top player to watch.
“It is painful. But they (JSerra) are a great team, and they have phenomenal talent,” Mater Dei coach Andy Thomas said, to the OC Register. “It is a tough league … a cruel league.”
Opening with a preseason home game against Buena High School on the 29th at 3pm, the Lions look to star forward “Crabby” (Juan Gutierrez), who was voted ESPN’s Athlete of the Year for the 2009-2010 season, to bring his A-game.
What makes Gutierrez even better is that he plays in a system that elevates his game. Last season, Gutierrez scored in three consecutive playoff games for the Lions, bringing the team’s second consecutive Trinity League title safely home for JSerra.
