Juan Gutierrez makes history at JSerra with pure talent and flair

The following is from an ESPN Rise article.

JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) hadn’t won a league game when Juan Gutierrez arrived on campus in 2007. Now the team is nationally ranked and chasing a Southern California title.

There are quite a few moments from the past three years that stand out to Juan Gutierrez, but let’s start at the beginning. Let’s start with the game against the team in the yellow jerseys.

It was December of 2007, and Gutierrez was one of eight freshmen starting for a JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) team that hadn’t won a Trinity League game since the school opened in 2003.

Gutierrez doesn’t remember who the game was against, but he does remember being scared out of his mind taking the field against a squad that was clearly much bigger and more experienced. Before long, the ball came to Gutierrez, and he received a memorable welcome to high school soccer.
