“He’s not a guy who wants to attract the spotlight,” says Tom Waszak, JSerra’s principal. “He’s a unique package. In my experience as an educator, Luke is one of those students who comes along only every five or 10 years.
Of the pressure to maintain his excellence on the track and in the classroom, Decker says, “I never really cracked to it. I think I handled it well. Distance runners have to handle stress really well in a race because the biggest thing that throws distance runners off is panic. You have to be able to perform under pressure and stress. As soon as you panic in a distance race, you’re done.”
