It didn’t take JSerra freshman Katie McLaughlin long to make a strong impression in high school swimming.
In her debut Saturday, the 14-year-old blazed to the fifth-fastest time in county history in the 100-yard butterfly at the JSerra Invitational.
McLaughlin, a rising standout with the Mission Viejo Nadadores club, won the butterfly in a meet-record time of 54.70 seconds. The time places McLaughlin just over a second off Tara Thomas’ 2007 county record of 53.54 for Beckman.
McLaughlin has earned two of her three qualification times for June’s U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly.
She also won the 100-yard freestyle in a meet-record 51.67 seconds and clocked a 59.22 in an exhibition race in the 100 backstroke.
