DeMaio brings the ‘Norwood Edge’ to West Coast

DeMaioBy Bruce Lerch, Boston LAX

Growing up in NorwoodAnthony DeMaio was indoctrinated into something people around town refer as “The Norwood Edge.” He’s since taken that edge to the west coast and shown the good people of California what being “Norwood Tough” is all about.

DeMaio simply exploded in his first year as a varsity lacrosse player at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, CA, setting the freshman points record for both the school and Orange County by piling up 61 goals and 19 assists.

In the process, he helped lead the Lions to the CIF South Section semifinals and a 15-5 overall record.

“The coolest thing about Anthony is, he is the quintessential team player,” praised JSerra coach Kyle Harrison. “We call a play, he runs it to a T and makes sure he makes the high level lacrosse IQ play. He scores his goals in transition opportunities or he’ll get a garbage goal because no one else will go in there and take the beating or he’ll get a garbage goal but he is the most unselfish player you’ll find.”

JSerra Nips Palos Verdes in Statement Game

IMG_2539In an exciting four quarters of lacrosse, the Lions added one more “W” to their record this season (9-2), but this one was special as they topped previously Southern CIF top-ranked Palos Verdes on their home field, 8-7. JSerra decided to play only one game over the spring break and Coach Harrison’s decision paid off.

The young Lions squad was given a few days off to relax and enjoy their break. Palos Verdes was the Los Angeles County Champions last year and they started this season where they left off last season. They entered the game with an undefeated record of 9-0, outscoring their opponents by an average of 8 goals per game.

The Lions came out of the box with junior midfielder Brenden Lynch (2 goals, 1 assist), scoring in the first two minutes of the game answered by the Sea Kings senior Team Captain Augie O’Hern (1g, 1a).  The rest of the first half was a true battle going into half time tied 4-4. Lions senior midfielder Cole Schleppy (1g), sophomore midfielder Jake Schleppy (2g) and freshman attack Anthony DeMaio (2g, 1a) all putting one in the net.

The JSerra Catholic High School Lions, led by Cole and Jake Schleppy, made a loud statement about this year’s Trinity League race with a convincing 13-4 win over the Santa Margarita Catholic High School Eagles. Tied 3-3 at half time, the Lions scored three quick goals to open the third quarter and then ran away from the Eagles.

The game opened with Santa Margarita controlling possession of the ball for most of the first quarter but struggling to points on the board. Meanwhile, the Lions capitalized on their first real opportunity of the game when Yuta Murata scored at the 3:00 minute mark of the first period to put the Lions up 1-0.

The Eagles responded with goals from Wes Schuler (unassisted) and Cullen Bock (assist Hayden Ruiz). Ruiz opened the second quarter with an unassisted goal to make it 3-1 at 8:15 of the second. Then the Schleppy brothers took over the game.

Cole ripped one into the far top corner as ran to his right at 8:15. About a minute later, younger brother Jake showed that the apple does not fall far from the tree as he scored on a near carbon copy to close out the half at 3-3.

The Lions opened the second half with a vengeance with four goals in the first three minutes. Freshman Anthony De Maio got it started with an assist from Jake Schleppy. Then it was Jake, Cole, and Jake again, all unassisted to make it 7-3.
