JSerra Pep Squad Brings Home Top Honors

IMG_0248The 2013/14 JSerra Pep Squad recently returned from USA Camp in Anaheim earning numerous awards.  During the closing ceremonies the girls and parents were thrilled to hear JSerra’s name called out for the prestigious awards.

“This year’s camp experience was remarkable. I had more fun with the girls than I have ever had and we grew so much together. All teams winning superior ribbons was such a blessing but I think the best part was the memories we made together. It was the perfect way to start off my senior year with such a great group of girls and I will cherish it forever,” said Layla Nasr, Varsity Captain.

IMG_0196The 48-member Pep Squad has been working extremely hard to prepare for camp and their dedication paid off.  For the first time in JSerra history the Pep Squad brought home this amount of awards.   The girls are excited to start the school year and bring their award-winning attitude back to JSerra.

“This year’s camp experience was the most memorable out of all my four years throughout high school. I was blessed with the opportunity to lead the song team as captain this year and I couldn’t be more proud of us four girls. We accomplished the unthinkable.  I couldn’t ask for a better, more hard-working squad of girls. It was truly a great way to walk out of my last high school cheer camp,” said Gianna Sciortino, Varsity Song Captain.

The annual Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade took place over the weekend and was themed for ‘Honoring Our Heroes’, and there were plenty who attended the event, as well as many who participated.

JSerra was a proud sponsor of the annual parade and had Julie Swail-Ertel, JSerra Aquatics Director and two-time Olympian participate in the parade.

“Being involved in the Laguna Niguel Parade was great to see the community out supporting the city and our hero’s,” said Swail-Ertel. “It’s a great way to kick off the Christmas season.”

Also in attendance were the JSerra Tennis and Swim CIF Champions, along with the three-time Trinity League, CIF, and State Championship Cross Country team.

The day was filled with excitement as the pep squad accompanied JSerra athletes as they walked through the largest parade in Southern California adorned by medals and banners displaying all the hard work each team has put into their sport.

JSerra was proud to be a part of the annual parade and sends a special thank you to The City of Laguna Niguel.

JSerra Pep Squad Leads in Cheer Competitions

Congratulations to the JSerra Pep Squad earning several outstanding achievements at the Summer Cheerleading and Songleading Camp.  The Elite High School Cheerleading and Songleading Camp was hosted at UC Irvine by United Spirit Association (USA) and encompassed four days of intense cheerleading and songleading training.  With nearly 400 other high school students, the JSerra Pep Squad stood out as one of the top squads.

JSerra earned three overall superior plaques in the varsity cheer, varsity song and freshman/JV cheer categories, for content taught at camp.

In addition to Superior rankings, JSerra also earned the prestigious title of JV Stunt Challenge Winners.  Freshman squad members, Avrial Barretto, Makenzie Beach, Gemma Hartigan, Emma James and Megan Lasken advanced through the semi-final round and won the entire competition.  The  girls competed against over 20 other JV stunt groups to walk away with the Overall Stunt Challenge Title.  They were the only freshman squad to represent in the final round and ended up winning the JV title.

JSerra was also fortunate enough to have two finalists represent in the Dace Star competition, senior Brittany Leland and junior Gianna Sciortino.

On an individual level, JSerra had six semi-finalists out of 50 competitors including JSerra seniors Elle Avery and Rachel Dupont, juniors Annie Pfost and Bri Porrello, and freshmen Miranda Balderas and Makenzie Beach compete in the Spirit Star competition.

Other awards earned over the weekend include:  Overall Spirit Award (Varsity Cheer & Varsity Song, JV Cheer and Freshman Cheer) and Most Improved Squad at Camp (JV Cheer).  For their high achievements, JSerra Pep Squad members were also invited to perform in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl in January, 2013 as well as in London this Winter, 2012.
