Senior Class Parking Spots

We have many traditions at JSerra, one being our seniors having their annual paint day at the school parking lot! Senior students have the chance to get creative and crafty for this classic tradition at JSerra.

Getting Back Into the Grove of School After Christmas break

The Christmas break has sadly come to an end, but after a lovely break from the books how can you possibly get back into the school groove? After all of the moaning, groaning, and eye rolling students are forced to come to terms with the fact that they will once again have to wake up before 11:00AM. It may seem like a daunting task, but rest assured, it can be done!

Make it easier on yourself and make the transition back to school as easy as possible. Before break officially ends, let the transition begin. Go to bed at a decent hour the last few days of break, that way your body does not go into shock when that 6AM wake-up call goes off on Monday morning.

Collect and organize your school supplies back together, that way you are ready to go. Try to establish a time schedule to plan homework and upcoming projects that you will be faced with, that way you are ahead of the game and know what to expect.

Review the basics of what you have been covering in your classes so that you are prepared and up to speed as the semester continues. Remember to get excited! Sure break may be over, but you get to hangout with all of the friends that you haven’t seen since last year!

Good luck lions and welcome back to school!

JSerra Blog: New Year, New Year Resolutions for Students & Parents

A new year filled with new resolutions. For many graduating high school students and parents 2015 will be a year full of change. It’s an exciting time of choosing which universities to attend in fall and parents figure out where they will be sending their children. On the brink of so many changes, it is important to start the year off right and set New Year Resolutions that will make 2015 a year of success!

JSerra CHS Blog_New Year Resolutions

Here are some great ideas for New Year resolutions for both students and parents:

  • Stop procrastinating. As a student and a parent, it is important to give yourself the appropriate amount of time needed to get the job done and to give the best effort you can.
  • Don’t do it all. You are a high school student with a hectic schedule and a million things to do. You may want to do everything with everyone, instead concentrate on a handful of things and excel at them.
  • Commit to keeping a calendar. With another busy year ahead, both students and parents should make use of a calendar planner to keep track of appointments, classes, sport practices and games to stay on top of everything and meet all deadlines.
  • Try something new. High school is the perfect time to spread your wings and branch out from what you are used to. Join a new club, make new friends or go on new adventures. This is the time to find what you like and dislike, so stray from your comfort zone and get out there!

Christmas Break Reflection: What are you most grateful for?

“It is not happy people who are grateful. It is grateful people who are happy.” Christmas break is here! From loving friends and family to a wonderful education to amazing extracurricular opportunities, Christmas is the perfect time to take a moment to reflect on the breathtaking life moments we are given and spend time with your loved ones.

JSerra CHS Blog_Christmas Reflection

As you’re on Christmas break, take the time away from school to relax and enjoy the time you have to spend with your family and friends. It is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of day to day life. As students, you have so many things going on that it’s easy to forget about the people and things that you have been blessed with. As parents, there are countless details of life to focus on, whether it’s work-life, home-life, or your students’ lives. Be sure to take a moment to tell loved ones how grateful you are to have them in your life!

It is important to remember the reason for the day. Take advantage of a break away from your hectic schedule to think of all of the things you have to be grateful for.

College Applications 101

Winter is here! That can only mean one thing for our juniors and seniors, college applications. Now is the time to start working on those essays, applying to the schools of your dreams, and signing up for financial aid. College applications can be stressful and overwhelming, but follow this easy guide and you will be set for success!

Start early and get organized!
You might think you have plenty of time, but those due dates will sneak up on you quicker than you think! Start early, make a plan and stick to it!

Tip: Create a calendar with the schools and their deadlines so you give yourself plenty of time to work ahead.

Remember, you are more than your test scores!

Colleges are looking to see which students have earned strong grades and high test scores, but they are also trying to learn about your character by seeing what you have done outside of the classroom. Be sure to let your personality shine and take advantage of the application essay to show more of who you really are.

Tip: Create a list of your strongest attributes, your passions and pastimes. Make sure they are included in the essay.

Stay in charge and stay focused.
This is YOUR future! You are in control of how much effort and time you want to put into these applications. Yes, the process is overwhelming, but if you take charge and stay focused you can make it happen.

Tip: Set aside time each day or each week to work down your list. Make it routine!

Shoot for the stars
Don’t skip out on applying for your dream schools because you think you won’t get in. Apply! You may have a better chance than you think. Worst-case scenario, you don’t get in, but at least you know you tried!

Tip: When researching schools, categorize them into an A, B and C list. Put your favorites in the A list and work down your list from there.

JSerra CHS Blog_College Applications 101

You’re not in this alone.
If you are confused about anything remember you have teachers, counselors and staff at JSerra that are here to help. Applying can be confusing and stressful so, if you are ever unsure about something with your application, just ask!

Tip: Make an appointment with your counselor today to get on the right track and to take advantage of all the services that are available from application workshops to scholarships and financial aid support

Hurley H20 Hydration Nation

The Rob Machado Foundation and Hurley H2O’s Hydration Nation made an appearance at JSerra’s Homecoming Rally. The organizations came to help the students understand their contribution toward a healthy Earth, emphasizing the need for conservation during the extreme drought California is currently experiencing.

Hydration NationStudents joined in on the fun and staffed the H2O booth to bring awareness to the water issues of our world, standing in front of the organization’s motto, “1 in 6 do not have access to clean water. 5 in 6 can help.”

Hydration NationLegendary surfer, Rob Machado came out during the homecoming rally to speak with the students and teach them about how great of an impact the action that they take today will have on their Earth tomorrow.

Hydration NationThe rally was interactive and fun. Many students helped out at the booth and took pictures to help raise awareness afterwards.

Hydration NationA special thank you the Rob Machado Foundation and Hurley H2O Hydration Nation for making such an impact on our Lions!
