JSerra Spring 2015 Signing Day

We are always proud of our Lions. Every year, we see students reach their potential and show the world who they are as individuals. They are first and foremost students, but our Lions are also stellar in other aspects of their lives! We are so proud of the following students who signed their letters of intent to the universities of their dreams this Spring!

Senior Awards Mass Makes a Splash

IMG_0276The annual senior awards Mass recognized students for their academic, athletic, and fine arts achievements in the class of 2013.

Father Damien Giap opened the awards with a blessing over the graduating class and the award recipients. Each academic department awarded a student who embodied what it means to be a good citizen both in the classroom and in the community, and who excelled in their respective academic areas.

Award recipients included Valedictorian Sachin Govil for the Math and Science Gold Awards, Vanessa Zuck salutatorian, international student Andrew Lee for the Fine Arts Gold Award along with Kallen Zerhan for her outstanding work in the arts, Trinity Wright for both the Religion and Social Studies Gold Awards.

Each student was recognized for their dedication and accomplishments in each of the awarded areas.

Other award recipients include Carlos Solorzano Jr. for the Foreign Language Gold Award and Taylor Santore for the English Gold Award.

Receiving a standing ovation, special honoree senior Kyle Robb was inducted into the United States Naval Academy and will dedicate nine years of service to the Navy. Robb will also go through an intensive training program on the field and in the classroom, as he begins his time in the Navy.

The U.S. Marine Corp. was also in attendance to award Devon Pflueger and August Touchard for their accomplishments in athletics, Nick Cimmarusti and Julia Kenefick for their leadership, and John Shaver and Katie Jenner were awarded for their work in the arts.

Colby Lindholm and Greg Bucilla were recognized as JSerra’s Athletes of the Year, along with Rebecca Millard and Kyle Robb being named JSerra’s top scholar athletes.

With such an accomplished graduating class, the only way to cool off from a four-year run was a splash in the pool. Ending the awards, each senior took a dive in the pool before reminiscing over the senior class video and yearbook signing party to celebrate.

Congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 2013. It has been great to see each student grow and we wish you the best in all your future endeavors.

JSerra Swim Team Serves the Community During the Lenten Season

The JSerra swim team hosts a sock drive every year in March for the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen in Santa Ana. Over 800 local families are served each weekend at Loaves and Fishes. The families who come are often in need of basic items.

Four years ago, Coach McLaughlin asked Director Maria Dzida, if she could use her swim team to help in any way.  She responded with ‘socks’. As Mrs. Dzida spoke of the lenten season and the washing of the feet, this become our project.

Every Spring, the JSerra swim team collects socks and food items to donate to the kitchen. The swimmers spend the day serving and giving back to those in need.

“This is an amazing group of kids. It shows the size of the their hearts every time we walk into the building,” said McLaughlin. “I am so very blessed and proud to be their coach both in and out of the water. They understand that receiving and giving go hand in hand.”

England Here We Come

Top varsity members of the JSerra cross-country team, competing as the San Juan Capistrano Track Club, have been invited to race in the British national cross country championships this January in Liverpool, England. The eighteen-athlete contingent will fly from Los Angeles to London on January 24, then spend four days in England racing and sightseeing.

“We’re very excited about this trip,” says Coach Marty Dugard, whose Running Lions have captured two CIF and two State titles in his eight years as head coach. “The race will be spectacular, some old-school cross country in the dead of winter, complete with snow and freezing mud. We’re also including an educational component by spending a day in London touring the British Museum, National Gallery, and Westminster Abbey — among others.”

The Running Lions are currently entering CIF postseason competition, which concludes with the State meet on November 24 in Fresno. The girls are ranked number two in their State division, while the boys are ranked number 11 in theirs.
