(San Juan Capistrano, CA)–Music instructor and member of the Chorus America, Brian Dehn will now lead JSerra’s Choral Department beginning July 2011.

Dehn, former music instructor at Cornelia Conelly School in Anaheim looks forward to continually building onto the successful program Choral Director Andrew Alvarez has built at JSerra four short years ago.

“I am proud and honored to be chosen to lead JSerra’s Choral Department, I look forward to many great additions and traditions that JSerra has instilled in the Choral program,” said Dehn.

We congratulate and thank Andrew Alvarez, exiting JSerra Choral Director, for his amazing work with the JSerra choir.  Andrew introduced choral music to JSerra and in four short years he built a program that has achieved rave reviews from audiences across the world, including Pope Benedict XVI, has performed in churches in Florence and Rome, including St. Peter’s Basilica, has won regional and national choral festivals and competitions, and brought great prestige and pride to JSerra.

“Due to Andrew’s great work he leaves a program that is highly acclaimed and one that has attracted the attention of other choral directors,” said Frank Talarico, JSerra President and CEO. “As a result, we are blessed to have strong interest from very talented choir directors who are excited about the opportunity to fill some big shoes left by Andrew’s departure. Brian possesses the expertise, experience, and vision to lead the JSerra choral program on the path of continued success established by Andrew Alvarez.  We are very fortunate to have found someone with Brian’s skill set to take over one of JSerra’s strongest and most valued programs.”

Dehn comes to JSerra with an extensive musical background from Chapman University in Orange, CA. Completing his Bachelors of Music in conducting, vocal performance and music education Dehn comes from Corneila Connelly School in Anaheim as their lead music instructor for the past 7 years.

JSerra Choral Music Ensembles Head to New York, USC

By Kathy Guerry

JSerra’s Choral Music Ensembles will play in two prestigious venues – one in New York, the other at USC – in early 2010.

On Feb. 20, the JSerra Chamber Choir will perform at the prestigious USC Thorton School of Music Invitational festival.

“This event is considered the most difficult festival to be invited to and only eight of the finest high school choirs from California are invited each year,” said director Andrew Alvarez.

The choir will perform in the Alfred Newman Recital Hall – one of the best performance venues for the choir to showcase its talents, he said.

Two months later, in April, the Chamber Choir, Women’s Advanced Ensemble and Alvarez will travel to New York City to compete in the Heritage Music Festival’s Festival of Gold.

Only choirs having previously earned the ‘gold-level’ distinction are invited to this prestigious competition which is host to many of the nation’s most accomplished music programs.

“Congratulations to Mr. Alvarez and the choir program for these amazing accomplishments,” said Tom Waszak, JSerra’s principal.

Preceding the two-day competition, the choirs will be performing concerts in St. Bartholomew Cathedral and Riverside Church – both great performance venues.  The groups will also visit Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, attend a Broadway workshop with a private director/actor, see a Broadway show and tour all of the other major sight-seeing attractions around the City.

In an effort to help cover some of the travel expenses, the Choral Music Program is involved with a couple of fundraising opportunities to which we’d like to draw your attention.  The first: a custom-designed, limited-edition keepsake JSerra Christmas Ornament crafted in fine pewter and featuring the JSerra lion head and school name banner.  This beautiful, must-have ornament is being offered for only $15 (see JSerra cashier) and makes a great Christmas gift for students, teachers and friends.

The second fundraiser, taking place on January 20, 2010, is Ladies Bunco Night at Amazing Grapes Wine Store in Rancho Santa Margarita! The Bunco buy-in price is $35 at the door. RVSPs are required for this limited-seating event – please follow this link for sign-up contact information.

You have our heartfelt thanks for your support of the JSerra choirs!
