Mater Dei of Chula Vista coach David Monroe kept screaming from the sideline, “Somebody get on that shooter.”

That shooter he was referring to was JSerra sophomore Coco Miller, and nobody from the Crusaders was able to stop her.

Miller finished with 26 points, including four 3-pointers, five rebounds and four assists, to help the Lions defeat Mater Dei, 60-52, in the opening round of the CIF Southern California Division 4 Regionals on Wednesday night at JSerra.

JSerra (24-7) avenged a 69-66 overtime loss to the Crusaders (20-7) earlier this season.

“We played them earlier in the season over Christmas and we lost to them in a tough overtime game,” Miller said, “so coming into tonight we had to give it all we had and play with our hearts.”

The first half went back and forth, but the Crusaders had a 28-27 lead at halftime after Kandiss Barber’s breakaway layup at the buzzer.

JSerra was able to build a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, and Miller sealed the victory with seven points in the final quarter.

JSerra point guard August Touchard turned in a gutsy effort. She injured her head and her ankle but never came out of the game, and she .

“I knew I had to step up especially when August got hurt,” Miller said.

JSerra’s girls basketball team has a lot of weapons this season.

Guards Coco Miller and August Touchard have been outstanding and Megan House, a 6-4 sophomore, and Courtney Vaccher, a 6-2 junior, dominated in the post for the Lions.

JSerra discovered a new weapon in junior guard Corinne Bogle, who gave the Lions a spark off the bench with 16 points to lead No. 3 JSerra to a 53-35 victory over Rosary in a Trinity League game on Thursday night at JSerra High.

“I knew beforehand that I didn’t have a great game the last time we played Rosary,” said Bogle, who had two points in JSerra’s 69-44 victory over Rosary on Jan. 10. “I just tried to do different things this time around.

“I knew I wasn’t great on the boards, so I just tried to perfect different areas as much as I can. It wasn’t all me. It was my teammates. August is great at passing. I know if I run the floor hard I’m going to get the ball in my hands.”

Rosary (14-10. 2-5) knocked down seven 3-pointers, including three in the first quarter to help the Royals build a 13-12 edge heading into the second quarter. JSerra responded with an 8-0 run to start the second quarter and build a 20-13 lead. Touchard was dishing out the assists and Bogle scored nine of her points in the first half to give the Lions (18-5, 4-2) a 27-21 lead at the break.

JSerra Catholic girls basketball Head Coach Mary Rossignol wins record 100th game.

Early in the Annual Oaks Christian Christmas Hardwood Classic the Lady Lions 65-24 win against Newberry Park became Rossignol’s record 100th win with JSerra Catholic High School.

“As a coach winning is great, but to hit a milestone like this is something you never forget,” said Rossignol, JSerra girls head coach. “It has taken time, commitment and hard work but it has all been worth it. I’m proud of the progress that has been made in our program.”

“Mary has been an integral asset to the athletic program at JSerra and to the girls’ basketball team,” said Dave Lawn, JSerra Athletic Director. “Her ability to transform the program into a highly ranked team in the toughest league in the nation was no small task.”

During Rossignol’s six years at JSerra as head coach, the girls have progressed to become second in the Trinity League and fifth in Orange County. Jourdan Banks (’07) became the school’s first student-athlete to be accepted to an Ivy League university and became team captain of the University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team.

The highly ranked team also prides itself on giving back to the community regularly. The girls host the Junior Special Olympics on campus as well as visiting the Irvine Cottages Senior Living Center throughout the year.

“It has been an honor to coach at JSerra, to be able to lead such great student-athletes with the commitment and dedication to each other and the selfless people. They are amazing!” said Rossignol. “I am also fortunate to have the support of an amazing coaching staff that give so much of themselves.”

JSerra Lady Lions are soaring above the competition. With a 15-4 season and a top 20 ranking in the state, the Lady Lions are a force to be reckoned with.

After a 74-10 victory of the Santa Margarita Eagles, the Lady Lions move forward confident about facing off against the Orange Lutheran Lancers, Thursday, January 17.

The Lady Lions 5-10 guard, Coco Miller has been named to the top Orange County shooters list. With flashes of being a big scorer as a freshman, Miller has continued to develop as a sophomore. Miller is fearless from beyond the 3-point arc,  a trait usually possessed by the best shooters.

Another standout player is senior point guard August Touchard. This senior creates offense for herself and her teammates with her drives to the basket. Touchard is a huge reason why the Lions are contenders for the CIF-SS Division 4AA title.
