Senior Awards Mass Makes a Splash

IMG_0276The annual senior awards Mass recognized students for their academic, athletic, and fine arts achievements in the class of 2013.

Father Damien Giap opened the awards with a blessing over the graduating class and the award recipients. Each academic department awarded a student who embodied what it means to be a good citizen both in the classroom and in the community, and who excelled in their respective academic areas.

Award recipients included Valedictorian Sachin Govil for the Math and Science Gold Awards, Vanessa Zuck salutatorian, international student Andrew Lee for the Fine Arts Gold Award along with Kallen Zerhan for her outstanding work in the arts, Trinity Wright for both the Religion and Social Studies Gold Awards.

Each student was recognized for their dedication and accomplishments in each of the awarded areas.

Other award recipients include Carlos Solorzano Jr. for the Foreign Language Gold Award and Taylor Santore for the English Gold Award.

Receiving a standing ovation, special honoree senior Kyle Robb was inducted into the United States Naval Academy and will dedicate nine years of service to the Navy. Robb will also go through an intensive training program on the field and in the classroom, as he begins his time in the Navy.

The U.S. Marine Corp. was also in attendance to award Devon Pflueger and August Touchard for their accomplishments in athletics, Nick Cimmarusti and Julia Kenefick for their leadership, and John Shaver and Katie Jenner were awarded for their work in the arts.

Colby Lindholm and Greg Bucilla were recognized as JSerra’s Athletes of the Year, along with Rebecca Millard and Kyle Robb being named JSerra’s top scholar athletes.

With such an accomplished graduating class, the only way to cool off from a four-year run was a splash in the pool. Ending the awards, each senior took a dive in the pool before reminiscing over the senior class video and yearbook signing party to celebrate.

Congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 2013. It has been great to see each student grow and we wish you the best in all your future endeavors.

Lindholm Named Female Trinity League Athlete of the Year

Colby*A press release from JSerra Catholic High School

JSerra  senior runner and scholar athlete, Colby Lindholm, was named female Trinity League Athlete of the Year.

Coming off of a record setting season Lindholm has become the 1600m champion in 2012 and the 3200m champion for 2013 in track and field for the Trinity League.

Lindholm was also a part of the three-time League, CIF, and State Championship cross-country team at JSerra. What Lindholm has accomplished has never before been seen in any CIF sport in Orange County, making her a triple crown three times, in only four short years.

Based on Lindholm’s impressive athletic resume she was voted the Trinity League Athlete of the Year by the League and its constituents.

“Colby’s long career list of accomplishments at the league, CIF and State levels are a testimony to her grit and outstanding work ethic. Without a doubt, she is the greatest runner — male or female — that JSerra has ever known,” said Head Coach Marty Dugard.

Lindholm will continue her legacy running as a Mustang at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo this fall.

“I am honored to have been chosen, I was shocked when I found out, I had no idea I was even nominated, it’s very flattering,” said Lindholm. “I am excited to have the opportunity to run with such a competitive team at Cal Poly.”

Lindholm was invited to attend the Orange County Athletic Directors Association’s “Margaret Davis & Ken Fagans Orange County Athlete of the Year” awards banquet, to be held on Tuesday, May 28 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Running Lions Leave Other Teams in Their Dust

JSerra’s Track & Field team racked up quite a list of accomplishments this season. But two accomplishments are so fantastic that the standout from the rest: the Running Lions took a record 15 athletes into postseason CIF competition and four of our athletes signed letters of intent to compete at the NCAA level.

Senior Harrison Steed won his third CIF Championship and is still working towards next week’s state meet in Fresno. He was third there last year, but first the year before. If he can jump another 7′ 2.5″, as he did in January, the odds are great that he can bring JSerra a second state championship. Next year he will be attending UC Berkley (Cal) on a full scholarship.

Senior Sydney Teske (All-CIF, All-Orange County, All-Trinity League) was third in the girls 800 at CIF Championships. She holds four JSerra school records, and is going to be running for the University of San Francisco next year.

Other college signings include Katie DeYoung who will attend University of Southern California, Chris Garcia who will attend Saint Mary’s College, and Taylor Mujica who will attend Concordia University.

Our boys 4×400 team of Chas Harmon, Alex Berman, Ace Raphael and Jake Decker were fifth at CIF Championships, earning them all CIF honors.

And, finally, a great sign for the future of the JSerra’s Running Lions were the number of underclassmen who dominated against our Trinity League rivals. Luke Decker (800, 1600), Colby Lindholm (3200), Caitlin and Ashley Nilssen (400, 800, 1600, 4×100) and Amanda Graceffa (100, 200, 4×100) are some of our superstar runners who will all be coming back next year to continue our growing the tradition of excellence. Or, as we like to say, Keep Pushing… Always.
