JSerra connected on 12 3-pointers, including five from Devon Pflueger (19 points), in posting a 75-51 Trinity League victory over Santa Margarita on Friday night at JSerra High.

“We really shot the ball well,” JSerra coach Joedy Gardner said. “We try to stay disciplined when running our (offense), and I thought we did that tonight.”

The Lions (11-4, 2-2) looked determined to put together a good performance in front of their standing-room-only crowd from the outset as they used a 16-0 run to take a 25-13 lead at the end of one quarter.

Santa Margarita (12-7, 0-4) rallied behind Joe Furstinger (17 points) in the second quarter, trimming the JSerra lead to 30-20.

That’s the closest the Eagles would get for the remainder of the game as the Lions closed the half on an 11-2 run.

Gardner considered Friday’s game a chance for his team to get “back in the hunt,” and he asked his players to come out focused against Santa Margarita.

The “hunt” Gardner referred to is the one for the league championship, something that remains a tall order after the Lions dropped their first two league games to heavyweights Mater Dei and St. John Bosco.

JSerra Boys Basketball Power Through Ocean View Tournament

JSerra’s No. 3-ranked boys basketball team flashed its potential at the Jim Harris Memorial Tournament of Champions on Friday night.

The Lions looked so balanced and deep in a 90-48 semifinal victory against No. 10 and host Ocean View, Coach Joedy Gardner might need to fast forward his expectations.

“I’m on a five-year plan,” said Gardner, in his fourth season. “We’re getting better. We’ve got some new faces that are getting used to each other. Our chemistry is getting better.”

Sophomore Rex Pflueger scored a game-high 20 points to lead five Lions (6-1) in double-figures.

JSerra’s inside-duo of Jamal Aytes and Dylan Osetkowski both added 16 points while Devon Pflueger and point guard Johnnie Vassar chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Rex Pflueger, Osetkowski and Vassar will be back next season, but they were part of an impressive blend against Ocean View.

“That was probably one of our best games we’ve played this year because we put 32 minutes together,” Gardner said. “We’ve been really struggling playing about 15, 16, 17 minutes and then going through those lapses, and those craters that we don’t like to go into.”
