Anaheim-JSerra Catholic High School defeated Santa Margarita Catholic 3-2 to capture the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League (ADHSHL) championship on March 6 at Honda Center.
More than 1,000 fans watched the varsity and junior varsity championship games, the latter of which was won by Damien HS over Long Beach Prep, 4-2.
Santa Margarita went undefeated in league play (8-0), finishing atop the league and earning a bye to the championship game. The Eagles were the highest scoring team in the league with 46 team goals. JSerra advanced to the finals after defeating Servite High School, 2-1, in the semifinal contest on Feb. 25.
JSerra came into the championship game as the underdog but jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal from Joseph Pauluzzi, but Santa Margarita came back to tie the game with a power play goal from Kyle White.
“Joe (Pauluzzi) has been a true leader for us all season,” said JSerra Head Coach Mike Perkins. “It is fitting that he scored the first goal and then cleared the puck out of our zone with 5 seconds remaining to ensure our victory.”
Santa Margarita jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the second when Kyle White capitalized on the power play with his second goal of the night, but JSerra answered five minutes later with a goal by Chandler Cole. The game remained tied going into the 3rd period and was back and forth throughout until JSerra’s Blake Reeves scored late in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Santa Margarita came back with a lot of pressure late in the game, but JSerra was able to hold on.
“The team took advantage of the last time they were to step on the ice together this year as a team. We talked about it in the locker room before the game. These guys deserved to win this game.”

JSerra Varsity Ice Lions won the Valencia President’s Day Tournament in exciting fashion. After winning its preliminary games 4-0 (California Bears), 3-1 (Beach City Lightning) and 4-1 (Ventura Mariners) they faced the McKinney, TX Lightning in the championship game.
The Lightning opened the scoring in the first period with a short-handed goal. The Lions didn’t equalize the game until seven minutes remaining in the third period. The game stayed tied through a five minute overtime period and went to a shootout. After ten rounds of shootout the Lions were victorious.
“The team stuck together through a slow start and slowly built up some momentum,” said Head Coach Mike Perkins. “They found a way to get the job done, and represented JSerra well.”
The JV Lions went 0-1-2 in a tough AA division.

The Junior Varsity Ice Lions capped their incredible season with a win Saturday against Servite High School, the 2nd place team in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League. The Ice Lions completed a perfect 12-0 record in league play.
“If we include our preseason we are 15-0”, say Ice Lions Team Manager, Kevin Stein. The championship game is being played on Monday February 28th at Honda Center. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. and all hockey fans are encouraged to attend.
“It’s been a terrific year as the boys have really worked thru multiple line changes, injuries and adversities in their quest to finish in first place. Everyone had high hopes and I must admit that when the notion of remaining undefeated throughout the entire season was first mentioned I was a huge skeptic.” Says Stein.
Stein is quick to point out that the boys are fortunate to have the league’s overall scoring leader but, this is a team effort and several players on multiple lines contributed to the victories with goals, assists, penalty kill minutes and an attitude of hard work which contributed to the boys finding a way to win even on the days that they weren’t playing their best hockey.
