DeMaio brings the ‘Norwood Edge’ to West Coast

DeMaioBy Bruce Lerch, Boston LAX

Growing up in NorwoodAnthony DeMaio was indoctrinated into something people around town refer as “The Norwood Edge.” He’s since taken that edge to the west coast and shown the good people of California what being “Norwood Tough” is all about.

DeMaio simply exploded in his first year as a varsity lacrosse player at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, CA, setting the freshman points record for both the school and Orange County by piling up 61 goals and 19 assists.

In the process, he helped lead the Lions to the CIF South Section semifinals and a 15-5 overall record.

“The coolest thing about Anthony is, he is the quintessential team player,” praised JSerra coach Kyle Harrison. “We call a play, he runs it to a T and makes sure he makes the high level lacrosse IQ play. He scores his goals in transition opportunities or he’ll get a garbage goal because no one else will go in there and take the beating or he’ll get a garbage goal but he is the most unselfish player you’ll find.”

Lions Take Control of Trinity League Race

This team, composed of mostly freshman and sophomores, put together a very challenging non-league schedule for the 2012 season, second only to Foothill. That difficulty of schedule seems to be paying off for the Lions, now 3-0 in Trinity league play.

With a great lacrosse season taking off take a minute to sit down with High School Illustrated as they talk with JSerra boys lacrosse coach Kyle Harrison.

Can you tell me about your youth athletic experience, where you grew up and what sports you played?

I grew up in Baltimore, MD and played lacrosse, basketball and soccer since I was 4 years old.

What experiences as a high school athlete do you still take to heart today as a head coach?

Preparation and attention to detail. No matter what level you’re playing, both are essential in building a successful team.

What are your most memorable experiences as a high school athlete, and what do you think your biggest accomplishment was has a high school athlete?

I’ve got some great memories from my high school days competing. I was fortunate enough to be a part of five championship teams, (two in lacrosse, two in basketball, one in soccer,) so those are certainly my most memorable. My biggest accomplishment would have been earning 12 varsity letters and starting on each team every year I was in high school.
