Leader of the Pride

Jim-Hartigan-12By Brian Park, The Capistrano Dispatch

JSerra Catholic head football coach Jim Hartigan is a man of perpetual motion.

On a warm, muggy Wednesday morning, he arrives at the school’s athletic campus at 6 a.m. to unlock doors, review schedules and go over the day’s itinerary with his coaching staff.

That’s about as easy as the day gets for him.

In no time, his varsity team begins to trickle into the weight room, some still rubbing the sleep out of their eyes. Meanwhile, Hartigan stands at the ready, his eyes trained to spot any player in need of some extra motivation.

As soon as the morning weight training sessions concludes around 9:45 a.m., Hartigan hustles out to a practice field to watch the future crop of Lions football players, the junior varsity and freshmen squads, go through 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 passing drills.

At this time last year, Hartigan’s day would have ended with a post-practice meeting with his staff and an afternoon session with the varsity. But in March, athletic director Dave Lawn retired to pursue full-time coaching opportunities and JSerra placed the interim tag on Hartigan. On June 20, rather than hire an outsider, the school announced Hartigan as its full-time athletic director, in addition to continuing his duties as head football coach.

JSerra connected on 12 3-pointers, including five from Devon Pflueger (19 points), in posting a 75-51 Trinity League victory over Santa Margarita on Friday night at JSerra High.

“We really shot the ball well,” JSerra coach Joedy Gardner said. “We try to stay disciplined when running our (offense), and I thought we did that tonight.”

The Lions (11-4, 2-2) looked determined to put together a good performance in front of their standing-room-only crowd from the outset as they used a 16-0 run to take a 25-13 lead at the end of one quarter.

Santa Margarita (12-7, 0-4) rallied behind Joe Furstinger (17 points) in the second quarter, trimming the JSerra lead to 30-20.

That’s the closest the Eagles would get for the remainder of the game as the Lions closed the half on an 11-2 run.

Gardner considered Friday’s game a chance for his team to get “back in the hunt,” and he asked his players to come out focused against Santa Margarita.

The “hunt” Gardner referred to is the one for the league championship, something that remains a tall order after the Lions dropped their first two league games to heavyweights Mater Dei and St. John Bosco.

JSerra Sophomore, Nick Robinson is OC Varsity’s week eight player to watch, and with good reason. Robinson completed 25 of 40 passes for 325 yards and two touchdowns in the near-upset over St. John Bosco.

Robinson proves to be a key player for the Lions as a strong defensive back, with only one previous season under his belt.

Dispatch Recognizes JSerra Football

JSerra moved to 5-0 on the season in a hard fought victory over Trabuco Hills Friday at Saddleback College, getting a major assist from junior Casey Eugenio, who accounted for three scores, including an interception return for a touchdown, as the Lions won 31-21.

The Lions took advantage of some early Trabuco mistakes, recovering a fumble on the first Mustang Drive deep in Lion territory, then holding the Mustangs off the scoreboard after a punt snap was fumbled, which started the second Mustang drive on the Lion 18.

Eugenio’s first big play came near the end of the first quarter, as he picked off Nathan Perry’s errant throw and took it in from 45 yards out, starting the scoring for the Lions. Perry and the Mustangs responded on the next drive, going 85 yards in 11 plays. The Lions then responded, as Dante Pettis took in a 23-yard strike from Nick Robinson in for a score. The Lions had one more score in them too, blocking a punt on ensuing Mustang possession through the end zone for a safety and a 16-7 halftime lead.
