JSerra Students Build Homes in Peru

By Ryer Baldridge

The morning of April 6, JSerra’s Peru Club departed from Los Angeles International Airport to Peru on its seventh annual missions trip. Each year, a large group of JSerra students head down to Piura, Peru to lend a   helpful hand.

This year, our JSerra mission’s team set a record of houses built with a whopping 14 homes. The Peru Club was also able to provide dozens of suitcases full of donations including clothes, shoes, sunglasses, and supplies.

The student’s journey to a private school, partly funded by JSerra, to help teach English, play with the students, and donate school supplies.

“It is the best feeling seeing how happy we make these families. That is the best reward of them all,” said a JSerra student.

Join the students next year as they head down to Peru to continue helping those in need.

JSerra Athletes Get Involved in Giving Back

By Amanda Samaan

JSerra student and player for the lady Lions basketball team, Lauren Portice has kept busy since her transfer to JSerra.

Looking for a way to give back to society in a way that could involve friends and fellow teammates, Portice found Sports Gift to be the perfect way to combine sports promotion and charity all in one.

Sport Gift, a non-profit focused on providing sports equipment to underprivileged children throughout the world and promoting sports related community service among our youth, works to improve the lives of and give hope to impoverished children through a variety of sports related programs, including the collection and donation of sports equipment.

To date, Sports Gift has collected over 130,000 articles of sports equipment for underprivileged children around the world, including the United States, Mexico, Indonesia, Central America, South America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Drawn to Sports Gift’s mission, Portice made it a personal goal along with the help of club moderator, Coach Mary Rossignol, the girl’s basketball team and JSerra students – to make JSerra the single largest contributor of sports equipment in the entire Sports Gift organization.

The club has set up donation tables at three football games and encouraged students and parents to bring in their new and used sporting equipment and clothing. So far the JSerra club has collected over 200 used and new sporting equipment and clothing. With hopes to have more donation events this year, the response and success has been a testament to the JSerra community’s commitment to service.

After receiving basketballs, soccer shoes, used running shoes, referee uniforms and many jerseys and shorts, JSerra’s Sports Gift club is hoping to get more equipment such as bats, balls and cleats, as we are approaching baseball season.
