Congratulations to Dustin Goetz for committing to play volleyball as an eagle at Concordia University.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to play volleyball in college. I didn’t think that I would have the opportunity,” said Goetz. “I have been very fortunate to have had a great community at JSerra and I hope to find that same family-like community at Concordia.”
Goetz has played for the Lions as a center for four years, and would like to major in Communications, while at Concordia.

Senior Carl Nolet, helped lead the Lions to finals of the Division 2 bracket of the Orange County Championships. JSerra went 5-0 in pool play in the tournament. Nolet has been a steadying force as the Lions have dealt with several injuries this season.
“I am very proud of these athletes. We have experienced much adversity this season and are coming together at the right time,” said Head Coach Tim Layton. “Dusty, Carl and Connor had a great tournament and their leadership came through at some tough times. Senior Chase Brannier and Kyle Smith made tremendous contributions that helped us throughout the tournament.”

JSerra boys volleyball coach Tim Layton is traveling to Utah this weekend to be honored on the 10 year anniversary when BYU defeated top- ranked UCLA to become the 2001 NCAA Division I Champions. Layton was a member of the championship team who finished with a record 23-4 and defeated UCLA 3-0 in the championship game.
“I’m really looking forward to the weekend and re-connecting with my former teammates. It was a great year and it is a life long memory to know I was a part of this NCAA Championship team,” Layton said.
The team will be honored during the BYU vs. UCLA match on Saturday, February 5. The reunion includes all of the players and coaches from 10 years ago including former JSerra boys volleyball coach, Troy Tanner.
Tanner was an assistant coach at BYU during this championship run. This reunion comes at a time when Coach Layton is gearing up for the 2011 volleyball season.
“I’m excited about this season. The boys have been working hard in the off-season doing strength training, playing club volleyball and improving their conditioning. We should field a competitive team this year and I’m ready for the season to begin.”
